Independence Looks Different for Everyone

July often brings thoughts of independence and freedom. While we tend to think of independence as doing everything on our own, the reality is much more personal than that.
Independence doesn't mean never needing help. It doesn't mean having every answer or accomplishing everything without support. For many people, independence looks like learning new skills, building confidence, making choices, and finding routines that work.
At TVW, we see independence grow in different ways every day. Sometimes it's mastering a new task. Sometimes it's navigating a workplace with confidence or developing friendships with coworkers. Sometimes it's simply believing in yourself enough to try something new.
Support and independence are not opposites. In fact, support often helps people become more independent. Families, employers, coworkers, and job coaches all play important roles in helping individuals develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed.
Progress rarely happens all at once. It happens through small moments that build on each other over time. Those moments deserve to be celebrated because they represent growth, perseverance, and the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways.
This Independence Day season, we are reminded that independence looks different for everyone, and that's something worth celebrating.
